Does God Really Care About ME?

One morning last summer, I woke up early and was sitting outside, enjoying the fresh air and reading my Bible.
Out of a clear, sunny blue sky… it started to rain.
I LOVE the rain. It felt like such a gift.

And as I delighted in the sounds and smell of that fresh rain, I came across Romans 8:16:
“The Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, ‘You are God’s beloved child.’”
It almost makes me cry again just thinking about it.
It felt so personal.
So clear.
I am God’s beloved daughter.
And here’s the thing:
You are God’s beloved child too.
Not because of what you’ve done.
Not because of what you haven’t done.
Not because you’re “good enough.”
Simply because you are His. Have you ever wondered if God really cares about you?
Let's unpack how you can be confident that he does.
God Said This About Jesus — Before Jesus Did Anything
In Mark 1, we read about Jesus’ baptism. And something incredible happens.
Before Jesus had healed anyone.
Before He preached a sermon.
Before He performed a single miracle…
God spoke from heaven:
“You are my Son, my cherished one, and my greatest delight is in you!" Mark 1:11
God wasn’t praising Jesus for accomplishments.
He was affirming who Jesus is.
Even more interesting…
This wasn’t the only time God spoke audibly about Jesus.
There are three moments in the Gospels where God’s voice is heard out loud:
At Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:17, Mark 1:11, Luke 3:22)
“You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
On the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:5, Mark 9:7, Luke 9:35)
“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
In the Temple, shortly before the cross (John 12:27–28)
Jesus prays, “Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice comes from heaven:
“I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
Pastor Tyler Staton points out that in context, God’s response is essentially saying:
“You’re already bringing me glory, Son… right now… as who you are.”
And as Staton further explains,
"Surely the three occasions that we eavesdrop on Trinitarian dialogue are the standout moments in the whole of the Bible...
When God spoke loud enough for His Son and the whole world to hear He had one message... I love you. I'm proud of you.
“But That Was Jesus…”
Fair question.
But Jesus tells us something shocking in John 15:9:
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.”
That means Jesus loves you with the same love the Father has for Him.
Romans 8 also tells us that we are God’s children and heirs with Christ.
So yes…
This applies to you and me, too.
If you've grown up in or around the church, that might feel like old news.
But...is it really?
Are you actually living into the reality that you are God's beloved child?
Because how you live reveals what you really believe about yourself.
It is not what you do... that determines who you are. It is who you are... that determines what you do.
Do you live brimming with confidence, hope and purpose - not because of what you might accomplish but simply because you know that you are God's beloved child?
Belonging. Safe. Significant.
If everything were stripped away — your health, wealth, friends, family —
would you still be rooted in your status as God’s beloved child?
When we look at our world today — with record-high levels of depression, anxiety, and loneliness —
it becomes clear:
At our core, we don't truly believe this.
(We'll dive into this more in the Training for Reigning program.)
But one simple way to start embracing this God-given identity today is by reading these Identity Statements out loud every day.
Here's a peek at what those look like...
I am accepted…I belong
I am God’s child, a part of His family. Rom. 12:4-5; John 1:12
I am Jesus' chosen friend. John 15:15
I have direct access to God through the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 2:18
I am secure…I am safe
I am forever free from God's disapproval and punishment. Romans 8:1-2
I am sure that God works all things together for good. Romans 8:28
I have not been given a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
I am significant…I am valued
I am hand-picked by Jesus to live like Him. John 15:16
I am God’s workmanship. Ephesians 2:10
I may approach God with freedom and confidence. Ephesians 3:12
But WHY Does He Care About Me?
God doesn’t love you because He has to. He loves you because He is love.
Love isn’t something God turns on when you behave well.
Love is His nature.
There’s nothing in you that makes Him start loving you —
His love is rooted in who He is, not in your performance.
Here’s the thing:
It would actually be more surprising if God didn’t love you.
Think about something you deeply care about.
Maybe it’s a pet. Maybe it’s a favorite stuffed animal. Even when a dog gets old and worn out, or a plushie is ripped and missing stuffing…
it’s still treasured.
Why?
Because it belongs to you.
Because you care about it.
It is yours.
God treasures you in the same way.
Now think about the last time you created something.
Maybe you made a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich.
Or grilled cheese for your brother.
Or a snack for a friend.
Would you be okay if they just tossed it on the floor?
Of course not.
You made it.
You care about it.
God made you.
And He cares about you even more.
You are His unique creation —
with unending potential for goodness and greatness in His good world.
And it doesn't stop there.
➜ He has real plans for you.
You are part of His plan to overthrow evil with good
and to help develop, care for and lead the world with Him.
You have a role to play.
And that leads to an important truth:
There is more to being human than most of us realize.
